Indian wedding budget calculator, by festivity
An Indian wedding is several events, not one, so this calculator prices each festivity separately: its own guest count, food per plate, venue, decor and entertainment, plus the costs shared across the weekend and a buffer. It shows the total, the cost of each festivity and the cost per guest. It works in your browser with no sign-up, and you can download the result as a CSV.
Prefilled with an example for Anaya & Rohan (US prices, five festivities). Change any number. Benchmarks checked October 19, 2026.
Festivities
Give each festivity its own guest count. Most families invite far fewer people to the mehndi than to the reception, and that is where the savings are.
Shared across the weekend
Keep this budget with the rest of the plan
In PlanMe each festivity has its own budget next to its guest list and RSVPs, so the headcount you budget for is the headcount that actually replies. Log vendor quotes and payments, and invite family or your planner to work on it with you. Free during beta.
How the calculator works
For each festivity you include, it adds:
guests × food per plate × (1 + service and tax %) + venue + decor + music and entertainment + other
Then it adds the shared costs (photo and video, outfits, hair and makeup, planner, invitations, transport) and the buffer percentage on top of everything. Cost per guest for the whole wedding is the total divided by your largest guest list, since that is roughly how many people you are hosting.
The savings line compares your catering with what it would cost if your largest guest list came to every festivity. In the Anaya & Rohan example that difference is about $48,000, which is why the budget guide starts with a headcount per festivity rather than one number for the whole wedding.
Benchmarks to sanity-check your number
US figures from published sources, checked October 19, 2026. Treat ranges as starting points, not quotes.
| Benchmark | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average US wedding (all types), 2025 weddings | $34,000; 117 guests; $292 per guest | The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study |
| Multi-day Indian wedding, 200 to 300 guests | $100,000 to $250,000; about $400 to $800 per guest across the weekend | Marigold |
| Mid-range: 250 guests, sangeet + ceremony + reception | $110,000 to $165,000 | MyDesiNetwork |
| Mehndi | $5,000 to $15,000; lighter meal at $40 to $80 a head | Marigold |
| Reception catering | $80 to $150 a head (typical tier) | Marigold |
| Indian catering per plate | Budget $30 to $50; mid-range $50 to $80; premium $80 to $150+ | EventAtlas |
Five ways to bring the total down
- Set a separate guest list for each festivity. Close family at the mehndi and haldi, everyone at the reception.
- Combine smaller festivities, such as the mehndi and sangeet on one night, so you pay for one venue setup instead of two.
- Book one photo and video team for the whole weekend rather than a different vendor per festivity.
- Ask caterers for a lighter menu at daytime festivities; the ceremony lunch rarely needs the reception menu.
- Get final headcounts from per-festivity RSVPs before the caterer's deadline, so you pay for plates that will be eaten.

Indian wedding budget questions
How much does an Indian wedding cost in the US?
Published 2026 guides put a full multi-day Indian wedding for 200 to 300 guests at roughly $100,000 to $250,000, or about $400 to $800 per guest across the weekend (Marigold). For comparison, The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the average US wedding at $34,000 for 117 guests. The gap comes from guest count and the number of catered festivities, so the calculator asks for both.
How do I budget each festivity separately?
Give every festivity its own guest count and per-plate price, then add its venue, decor and entertainment. Costs that span the weekend, like photo and video or outfits, go in the shared section so they are not counted twice. The calculator adds catering service and tax, then a buffer, and shows the total and cost per guest for each festivity.
Which Indian wedding event costs the most?
Usually the reception, because it has the largest guest list and the most decor, followed by the sangeet and then the ceremony. The mehndi and haldi are normally the smallest, which is why giving each festivity its own headcount matters so much.
How much should I budget per plate for Indian catering?
US caterers' 2026 pricing guides put a budget buffet at about $30 to $50 a plate, mid-range at $50 to $80 and premium hotel catering at $80 to $150 or more (EventAtlas). Lighter meals for the mehndi or sangeet often cost less than the reception dinner. Service charges and tax are extra, so the calculator adds them as a percentage.
How much buffer should a wedding budget have?
A common rule of thumb is to hold back about 10% before splitting the budget, so the calculator starts at 10%. Raise it if vendor quotes are still coming in or your guest count isn't settled.
Is the calculator free, and is my data saved?
Yes, it is free and needs no sign-up. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Your last numbers are kept on this device only, and you can download them as a CSV that opens in Google Sheets or Excel.
Can I share the budget with my family or wedding planner?
Download the CSV and send it, or set up the wedding in PlanMe, where the budget lives next to your festivities, guest list, vendor quotes and payments, and family members or a planner can work on it with you. PlanMe is free during beta.
