- **How long:** Typically 1 to 3 hours
- **Typical guests:** Often 20 to 80 close family and friends
- **Hosted by:** Each family, often separately at its own home

What it is

## What is a haldi ceremony?

Haldi is the Hindi word for turmeric. At the haldi ceremony, elders and close relatives take turns rubbing a paste of turmeric, gram flour, oil and rosewater or milk onto the bride's or groom's face, arms and feet. Families see it as a blessing and a way to make the couple glow for the wedding. It's also the closest family's chance to fuss over them one last time.

The name and details change by community. Gujarati families often call it pithi, Bengali families hold a gaye holud, and in Pakistani and many Muslim South Asian weddings a similar ritual is called mayun or ubtan. Punjabi brides also have the chooda ceremony, where they receive their red and white bangles, usually on the morning of the wedding.

The bride and groom usually have separate haldis at their own family homes, sometimes on the same morning. Some couples now do a joint haldi, which turns it into a small party with music, flower petals and a lot of photos.

Timing

## When it happens and how the haldi ceremony runs

A sample morning haldi before an evening event:

1. Morning, early: Set up seating for the bride or groom, bowls of paste, flowers and towels.
2. First hour: Close family arrives. Elders apply haldi first, then everyone else takes a turn.
3. Second hour: Music, playful chaos, photos and a simple breakfast or lunch.
4. After: The bride or groom bathes and rests. Leave a proper gap before hair and makeup for the next event.

If haldi and mehndi fall on the same day, do the haldi first so the turmeric is washed off before the henna goes on.

Guests

## How many guests come to a haldi ceremony?

Haldi is one of the smallest events of a South Asian wedding. Many families keep it to parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and a few close friends, typically somewhere between 20 and 80 people.

Because it is often held at each family's home, the two sides may each have their own guest list. Treat it as two small events if that's how your families do it.

Checklist

## Haldi planning checklist

### 1 to 2 months before

- Agree with both families on timing, location and whether it is joint or separate.
- Decide who is invited. This list is usually much shorter than the reception list.
- If you want a photographer, book them for an hour or two; many couples have their main photographer cover it.

### The week before

- Buy turmeric, gram flour and the other paste ingredients, or ask an aunt who has a family recipe.
- Get yellow or white outfits that can be ruined, and old towels and sheets.
- Plan seating: a low stool or chair for the bride or groom, protected floors or an outdoor spot.
- Order marigolds or flower petals if you want a petal shower at the end.

### The day of

- Have a bucket of water, wipes and a hose or shower nearby.
- Keep a simple meal ready for close family.
- Leave at least a couple of hours between the haldi and the next event's hair and makeup.

Costs

## What drives the cost of a haldi ceremony

Haldi is usually the least expensive event of the wedding. Costs depend on your city, the season and your guest count, so we don't quote ranges here. Get two or three quotes for each line below, and see [what an Indian wedding costs in the US](https://www.planme.club/articles/how-much-does-an-indian-wedding-cost) for published ranges with sources.

| Cost | What to ask for in the quote | What drives it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paste ingredients | Usually bought by the family, not quoted; many use a family recipe | Turmeric, gram flour, oil and rosewater or milk. |
| Decor and flowers | Quoted per event; ask what garlands, petals and setup are included | Marigold garlands and petals are the usual splurge. |
| Food | Often a home-cooked or simple catered meal | Breakfast, lunch or snacks for close family. |
| Outfits | Varies | Many families buy inexpensive yellow outfits they expect to stain. |
| Photography | An hour or two of your photographer's time | Often added to the main wedding package. |

Hosting at home with close family only is the easiest way to keep the haldi cheap.

RSVPs and guests

## RSVP and guest tips for the haldi ceremony

- Tell guests to wear clothes they won't mind staining. Turmeric doesn't wash out easily.
- Give the exact start time. Haldis are short, and late arrivals can miss the main part.
- If it's at home, share parking notes and which door to use.
- Let guests know whether to come ready to be splashed too. At some haldis everyone ends up yellow.

### What is the purpose of the haldi ceremony?

Family members apply turmeric paste to the bride and groom as a blessing before the wedding. It is also a chance for close family to spend time with the couple and have fun before the bigger events.

### When is the haldi ceremony held?

Usually the day before the wedding or on the morning of the wedding. Some families hold it before the mehndi earlier in the week.

### Do the bride and groom have haldi together?

Traditionally they have separate haldis at their own family homes. Joint haldis are becoming more common, especially when both families are staying at the same venue.

### What should I wear to a haldi?

Yellow or white clothes you don't mind staining. Turmeric marks fabric, so skip anything precious.

### What is the difference between haldi and pithi?

They are the same kind of ritual with different names. Pithi is the Gujarati name for the turmeric ceremony.

### Does the haldi come before or after the mehndi?

It depends on the family. The mehndi is usually one to three days before the wedding and the haldi the day before or that morning. Our article on [Indian wedding events in order](https://www.planme.club/articles/indian-wedding-events-in-order) shows the common three-day layout.
